On a bright but bitterly cold evening in Ratoath Trim started very well and had a point on the score board after thirty eight seconds from Alan Douglas , this point was followed by a superb point from play from Neil Heffernan in the third minute and a Brian Dowling free in the fifth minute. Trim wew flying and playing very well. Then disaster struck the team in red and white when Ratoath scored two goals in succession in the seventh and eight minutes. These goals were of the very soft variety, the Trim full back line had three chances to clear the first goal but failed to do so. The second was directly from the puck out, Ratotath’s inter county star center back Darragh Kelly caught the puck out on his own sixth five meter line , hit a diagonal pass fifty yards to the totally unmarked Gavin McGowan who in turn ran directly at the Trim goals and fired a shot past the helpless Charlie Ennis the Trim Keeper. Ratoath kept the pressure on the Trim defense and added nine points to the score board by the twenty third minute. During this period of dominance by Ratoath the Trim team were total out of sorts. The town side dis muster up some energy near the end of the first half and scored a goal from the stick of Neil Heffernan , Alan Douglas (2) and Brian Dowling (3)Mikie Cullen (2) rounded up the scoring in the first half . It was a good end to the first half from Trim but the were behind by four points.
Half Time Score
The second half started with Ratoath again in the ascendancy and they piled on the pressure onto the Trim team and struck one goal and six points in the first ten minutes of the second half, to leave the scores 3-15 to 1-8. The game then became a none event with neither Team registering a score from the tenth to the twenty third minute. Neil Cole then made some changes and introduced Jamie Lee to the defense, Andrew Dienan to attack , Neil Heffernan from center forward to full forward and Mikie Cullen from the full forward line to the middle third of the park, he also Moved David Murtagh to the middle of the field. These changes seemed to ignite fire and pace to the Trim side and when Neil Heffernan struck the back of the net with six minutes to play, it took the bad look off the score board for the Trim side. Just then the Trim team woke up and scored two more goals in the next sixty seconds when Mikie Cullen hit the back of the net as did Brian Dowling. The town side then added two points to leave the score at 3-15 to 4-10 only two pints between the sides. A miraculous recovery and win was on the cards for Trim but alas this was not to be as Ratoath’s county men Darragh Kelly and Gavin McGown took control again and spurred their team on in the closing few minutes scoring two goals and two points in the final three minutes of the match.
Ratoath 5-17 Trim 4-10
Trims management team have much to reflect on after this dismal listless performance by their team, They were at near full strength and were brushed aside by Ratoath.
As they say back to a very big drawing board.
