Under 16 Football League Battling Trim Just Fail
A brave and battling display by Trim just wasn’t enough as they went down to Ratoath by the narrowest of margins in the opening round of the under 16 football Summer League in Trim on Tuesday 27th June.
Trim started well despite the six week layoff from football and Harry Harlin registered two good points in the first five minutes.
Ratoath exerted more pressure in the next five minute period and despite great work from Sean Mahony, Conall Rogers, Aonghus Short and Brian Bolger Trim conceded 1-2. The goal came as Brian Bolger was injured and had to retire from the game.
Trim responded well to the setback and Aonghus Shortt finished a great passage of play with a point. Conor Quigley and Harry Harlin worked well at midfield and gave Ian Birmingham, Harry Kennedy, Mikey Cole, Jonathan McEvoy, Frank O’Reilly and Justin Barbu a good supply of the ball. Harry Kennedy pointed a free and Justin Barbu added two great scores. The first, a goal, came from some quick thinking by Conor Quigley who passed to him from a 45 and Justin made no mistake with a great shot to the back of the net. He scored a point immediately afterwards when he intercepted the kick out.
Once again Ratoath upped their game and scored two pointed frees to leave them a point behind. Trim extended their lead with a Harry Kennedy free after the lively Johnny McEvoy was fouled. Ratoath again pointed and in the 27th minute got a goal to restore their lead at half time-Trim 1-6 Ratoath 2-5.
Ratoath continued the second half as they finished the first with two early points. Trim kept pressing but were struggling to get scores. Harry Kennedy pointed a free and Ratoath struck with two more as they looked to be taking control of the match. But Trim refused to give in and with Daniel Coleman, Ben Holden and Liam O’Reilly doing Trojan work in defence and Peter Brennan making some great saves they thwarted Ratoath on several occasions.
Trim also started to move the ball more quickly causing the Ratoath defence more problems. Gary Fleming and Adam Boyle were introduced around this time and the fresh legs helped Trim to up their game again.
They were rewarded when Frank O’Reilly was foot blocked in the “square” and Harry Kennedy slotted the penalty home leaving a two point margin with seven minutes to go.
Conor Quigley responded to the next Ratoath point but they added two more to leave them four points clear, Trim responded well and were unlucky not to score points on three separate occasions. With a minute to go they were rewarded with another penalty which the Ratoath keeper stopped but Trim retrieved the ball, passed it around until Gary Fleming got on the 21 metre line and sent a rasper to the back of the net. Unfortunately, Trim ran out of time and Ratoath held out for a one point win.
Final Score: Trim 3-8 Ratoath 2-12.
