Meath Football B League Division 2 result Trim 1-14, Walterstown 0-16
This Trim B League side maintained their unbeaten record when they beat Walterstown on Wednesday evening last. This latest victory leaves them on top of the league table with four rounds played. However their victory was not easy and they were severely rattled early on in the game when they went six points down after fourteen minutes when they played second fiddle to a rampant home side. The Trim lads then gained some composure and scored two points in the middle of the half, the first from Daire Lynch and the second a free from Robbie Kenny. This was the first of nine points from the boot of the classy Lynch who was on fire at corner forward. Walterstown kept up the pressure with two points in the sixteenth and eighteenth minute to regain their six point lead. Trim’s centre back Darryl Phelin reduced the deficit by one in the twentieth minute. The home side struck again in the twenty fifth minute but from there until the end of the half it was all Trim as they hit 1-2 in a four minute period to leave the haft time score at Trim 1-5, Walterstown 0-9. The Trim goal was a superb effort from Darryl Phelin who shot from a long distance out after being picked out by a sublime pass from substitute David Murtagh who made a significant impact when sprung from the bench in the twenty fourth minute.
Diarmuid Dempsey’s half time talk obviously charged up his Trim players whereby they hit five unanswered points in the first six minutes of the half with the ever accurate Daire Lynch hitting four and full forward Alan Shine hitting one to leave the Reds suddenly four points up. The homsters pulled back a point in the tenth minute but the visitors hit two more points in the following two minutes, the first from Lynch and a excellent effort from David Murtagh to leave Trim five up. But Walterstown weren’t phased and they recovered to hit five points in the trot to leave proceedings with ten minutes to go level pegging. Both sides traded points directly after with Lynch doing the honours for the Trim lads to set up a tense scrap to the end with both sides spurning chances but Lynch again (who else) had the last say with a magnificent ’45 effort with the wet ball sailing over the bar. That was the final score leaving the men in Red ahead by one point at the final whistle 1-14 to 0-16.
Alan Carey had another fine game in the Trim goals and pulled off a number of great saves to keep his side in contention when struggling. Nigel Duignan and Eoin O’Connor also had a busy hour in the forward line.
