Meath All County Football A League, Trim 0-12, Seneschallstown 1-21.

Trim Intermediate footballers made the journey to Seneschallstown on Saturday evening last to play the home team in the fifth round of the football A league. It was believed that it would be a tough encounter for the Trim lads as their senior opposition were the table toppers being unbeaten in previous rounds, and tough it was. The first half was a close contest with Trim giving as good as they got but the Yellow Furze side edged in front early on and finished the half two points up on a scoreline of 0-8 to 0-6.

Two minutes after the restart Trim had regained parity with two points and looked to be in control. Then, in the fourth minutes it was as if the Biblical enactment of the parting of the dead sea was taking place. Seneschallstown started to run through the Trim defence and did it consistently for twelve minutes scoring eleven unanswered points. The hapless Trim backs could not stem the onslaught as the opposition set up attack after attack from their half back and centrefield lines. With ten minutes to go and eleven points down the Trim lads gained some composure and pulled back the opposition with four points in a row but then conceded a goal and point just before the end to finish twelve points down.

Michael Lowther got Trim off the mark with a fine left footed point in the third minute. Seneschallstown followed swiftly with the equaliser. Frankie Murphy then put Trim ahead after a piecing run from mid field in the sixth minute. The Yellow Furze side then hit three points on the trot before Michael Lowther was on target again in the sixteenth minute. The opposition then hit three points in as many minutes to go four points ahead but Lowther was on hand again with a pointed free. Seneschallstown kept four points ahead with a score in the twenty fifth minute but Trim finished the stronger with two points from Lowther and Darryl Phelin. The latter score resulted from a long run up the right wing from the youngster who struck from forty meters without a break in stride to leave two points between the sides at the break.

On the turnaround Frankie Murphy fisted a point and Mark Gilsenan then levelled proceedings in the third minute after some fine build-up work from Damien McGee and Ronan Fitzsimons. Alarmingly then, the floodgates opened and for the following fifteen minutes Seneschallstown pummelled the Trim defence with wave after wave of attack to come out the other end twelve points up. Michael Lowther recovered some Trim pride with three points just after the twenty minute mark and Frankie Murphy closed the Red’s account with a point in the twenty fifth minute. Seneschallstown though, were not finished as they hit 1-2 in the final minutes.
