Report on Intermediate football challenge game – Trim versus St Fechins (Drogheda).
Half time score – Trim 1-2, St Fechins 0-4.
Full time score – Trim 2-7, St Fechins 0-6.
Last Saturday night, John Andrews and his management team sent their charges out in their third challenge game of the 2012 season in preparation for the upcoming league and championship campaign. The game was played under lights in Trim GAA grounds. The opposition was St Fechins, the Louth Junior football champions and Leinster Junior football finalists of 2011.
The game was played in cold and blustery weather conditions which challenged the skill and advancement of both teams. Nonetheless it was a useful workout for both. Trim played against the wind in the first half and were first of the mark with a Keith Hamilton pointed free. The home team kept up the early pressure and were rewarded by a Neil Heffernan goal in the seventh minute after St Fechins were wide of the mark. The wind assisted visitors upped the ante and controlled the game over the following twenty minutes. After hitting four consecutive wides they eventually got on target with four points in a row. Trim had the last say of the half with a point from the boot of Keith Hamilton to go in at half time one point ahead.
On the turn around the home team led the way and after three wides they hit two points in the ninth and tenth minutes from James Andrews and Paul Flanagan. St Fechins responded with two points but for the final fifteen minutes of the half it was Trim who forced the pace hitting one goal and three points to no reply from the visitors. The points came from Neil Heffernan, Frankie Murphy and James Andrews with the goal coming from Damien McGee.
