Trim Intermediate footballers commenced their 2012 season with a challenge game against Ballivor in St Loman’s Park last Saturday evening. The visitors were always going to have the edge in fitness. After winning the 2011 Meath Junior football championship last October they went on to capture the Leinster junior football championship in December and have continued training over the Christmas period in preparation for their All Ireland semi final in a few weeks. The Trim lads were in heavy pre season and not as sharp as their opponents. Nonetheless, it was a good workout for both teams.
The game was played in three by twenty halves to give all of the thirty Trim players in attendance a runout. The exchanges in the first half were even up to twelve minutes with both side hitting two points apiece, the Trim points coming from Michael Lowther and Paul Gilsenan. For the remaining eight minutes of the half the visitors pulled away with five points on the trot to no reply from the homesters.
The second half proved to be a one sided affair with the Ballivor lads taking complete control. They out played the home side in all areas of the field and after seven minutes were nine points ahead before Trim hit their only point of the half from the boot of Pail Gilsenan. The remaining scores of the half came from the visitors when they hit 2-2 to to put the games beyond Trim’s reach.
The third half was a more even affair with the home side regaining their composure and indeed they out scored their opponents by three points to two with the points coming from two Paul Gilsenan frees and a point from play from Niall Murray.
The Trim panel of players for the game were:
Brendan Murphy, Daryl Phelan, Stephen Farrell, Colm Flaherty, Shane O’Connor, Frankie Murphy, Ryan Andrews, Paul Gilsenan, Damien McGee, Paul Flanagan, Maurice Power, Sean McGee, Shane Lenehan, Michael Lowther, Mark Gilsenan, Michael Lydon, Gary Clarke, Colm McGrath, Shane Downes, Brian Flynn, Robbie Brennan, John Pedan, Darragh Kennedy, John Cunningham, Keith Hamilton, James Andrews, Stephen Doyle, Karl Dwyer, Niall Murray.
