Rugby superstar comes to Trim GAA Club

Trim GAA Club was honoured on the occasion of the launch of their history book on Friday 2nd. December with the attendence of former rugby star Ollie Campbell.

 

Old Belvedere and Irish International, Ollie was on of the best out-halfs’ in the world during the 1970′s.   He won 22 Irish caps and played in two Lions tours.

 

 

Ollie’s exploits for the Irish team were legendary, as was his battle with Tony Ward for the No.10 jersey. In 1979, aged 25, he set an Irish record on the Tour to Australia when he scored 60 points, 19 of them in Brisbane which was an Irish record for points in a match against Australia. In February 1982, he kicked all of Ireland’s 21 points against Scotland to secure the Triple Crown for Ireland for the first time since 1949. He won a total of 22 Caps for his country, scoring 217 test points. In addition, he was also capped seven times for the British and Irish Lions, 3 in 1980 to South Africa and 4 in 1983 to New Zealand. He scored 184 points in total for the Lions. He also toured twice with Ireland, to Australia in 1979 and to South Africa in 1981.
