Trim Girls qualify for Cup Final
Trim 1-03 Gaeil Colmcille 0-3
Having completed seven very tough games in the U13 division 2 league, the Trim girls secured a semi final place by finishing the league in joint first position alongside Oldcastle and Gaeil Colmcille on 15 points each. On Sunday the girls travelled to Kells to face Gaeil Colmcille in the semi final.
The Trim girls went into their first semi at this level confident of a good performance as they have shown signs of improvement throughout the season. However, their regular goalkeeper, Ciara Hanson, was injured and unable to play. The no.1 jersey was handed to Elaine Murtagh who indicated her willingness to play by suggesting to the coach, “can someone else go in goal???”.
The game was played with great intensity and although it was a very wet day the girls stuck with their plan and maintained a lot of possession in the first half which saw Hannah Clancy notch over a point and Sarah “goal scoring machine” Lynch score a great goal to leave the half time score at 1-1 to 0-0.
With 25 minutes between them and a place in the cup final the girls got stuck in to the second half which saw the Kells team push to regain control of the game. Dervla Fahey and Hannah Clancy showed great courage at midfield along with Isabelle Varley who again impressed, while the entire back line worked tirelessly to hold off sustained attacks from the kells forwards. The Kells girls scored three points and got themselves back in the game. Aideen Downes tapped over a point to get Trim on the second half score sheet and Dervla Fahey scored a point from a late free to leave a goal between the sides.
With only minutes remaining the Kells team pressed for a goal and worked the ball through the Trim defence, there was only one thing on their mind and following a series of passes the ball was fired towards the Trim goal, all looked lost for the girls as the ball sailed towards the top right corner of the Trim net……… when out of the blue came the diving hands of Elaine Murtagh to scoop the ball away from goal, a fantastic save at the end of an exhausting game. Kells won the kick out and again pressed for goal. Full back and Trim Captain, Kate Dunne, made a crucial interception and sustained a nasty blow in the process winning a free kick. The free out was won by Kells who again sent a series of passes into the Trim back line and looked to have a goal at their mercy when Leanne Coffey made a fantastic interception in front of goal and carried the ball out field to be met by the final whistle and send this gutsy Trim team into the Division 2 final in their first year playing at this level. Final Score Trim 1-03 Gael Colmcilles 0-3.
Well done to all the Trim team for a very entertaining and spirited performance.
