U17 Football League (07/10/11)

Trim 3-16 Dunderry 1-09

Trim U17’s recorded their second win of the week with a strong display against Dunderry. A neutral could travel the length and breadth of the country, but would be unlikely to see a more open attacking first half of football. Constant attacking play yielded a half time score of Trim 2-10 Dunderry 0-07.

The game had a blistering opening with a score a minute for the first eight minutes. Paul Melia hit the opening point of the game after a fine pass in by McGrath. It was a busy few minutes for McGrath as he was, with the help of Andrews, provider for the second score after he won a free which Lenehan converted. Lenehan returned the favour, winning a ball in the corner and passing to McGrath who scored Trim’s third point.

Dunderry bit back and could have wiped out Trim’s early work but for a great save by Connell who pushed the ball over the bar. Dunderry’s second point was a similar score as Connell parried a goalbound shot over the bar. The opening goal went to Trim in the sixth minute. Great play by Stowe and O’Rourke put Lenehan in one on one and his shot squeezed in. Trim’s passing was causing problems as they found free men in scoring positions. Melia and McGrath worked the ball free before releasing O’Rourke for Trim’s fourth point. O’Rourke was then fouled in the next attack; Lenehan pointed the free.

The run of a score a minute was then broken as Trim hit the first wide of the game. Dunderry pulled back a point from a free as they enjoyed a strong ten minute spell between the tenth and twentieth minutes. O’Rourke answered this point following a one two with Paul Melia. Two points for Dunderry, one from a free, closed the gap slightly before White pointed in the sixteenth minute. Further Dunderry points left the scores Trim 1-07 Dunderry 0-07 after twenty minutes.

McGrath popped up with another point following a ball in by White. O’Rourke had a goal opportunity in the twenty third minute but he was dragged back for a free; Lenehan tapped this over.

Then came what was undoubtedly the score of the game. With Dunderry’s corner forward, their best player on the night, cutting in towards the Trim goal great tackling by Nally and Clarke disposed him and the ball was hacked clear to the waiting Stowe. The ball was carried by Stowe and White. White passed the ball onto O’Rourke and he hit a rocket into the roof of the Dunderry net.

More goal chances followed but with no success, however McGrath did score a point on the rebound when Stowe’s effort was saved.Shortly afterward the referee brought an end to one of the best attacking thirty minutes seen in Trim this season, Half time Trim 2-10 Dunderry 0-07.

The second half didn’t live up to the standards of the first but the chances were there. More goal scoring opportunities came and went, possibly the only disappointment for Trim was the amount of goal chances that were wasted.

O’Rourke ghosted in behind the Dunderry defence in the opening minute of the second half but an excellent block by his marker denied him a goal. White put James Cullen in on goal but his effort was saved. The first score was to Trim when a deft pass in by Andrews resulted in a point for O’Rourke. Dunderry quickly cancelled it out.

Trim were left rueing another goal chance as Andrews had a goal chalked off for square ball. Andrews and O’Rourke then combined to set Lenehan up for a point. Dunderry lost a goal chance of their own as a shot came out off the post.

Andrews and O’Rourke tagged on another point apiece as Trim extended their lead. A smart forty five by White resulted in a point for McGrath after sixteen minutes of the half. Stowe won the kickout and played the ball onto Andrews, he moved the ball in for Cullen. Cullen’s first shot was saved, but he buried the rebound giving Trim their third goal of the game.

There were plenty more goal chances in the final ten minutes but no success. Lennon and Andrews both had goal attempts saved, however Lennon did add Trim’s final point of the night with three minutes to go. Dunderry had pointed a free just before this. They were then deprived of a goal when a shot rattled out off the crossbar, but they got their goal in the final minute of the game. Final score Trim 3-16 Dunderry 1-09.
