Senior camogie girls fail at final hurdle

Kilmessan were competing in their 15th consecutive final and ran out convincing winners over Trim to complete a three in a row of Meath Senior Camogie titles at a wet Ashbourne.
When these two sides met in last years decider Kilmessan came away with a narrow 1-12 to 3-2 win at Kiltale. The reigning champions made no mistake this time. The winners were 1-4 to 0-0 up after ten minutes. Frances Lynch playing at full foward got the goal and the accurate Aileen Donnelly sent over four points. Donnelly added another three points to her first half tally. Trim had to wait till the 20th minute for their opening score courtesy of Christine Fagan. Fagan added another point to leave Trim 1-9 to 0-2 in arrears at the break. It could have been closer had Fagan converted a penalty with five minutes remaining but Kilmessan keeper Noreen Sheridan brought of a good save.
Trim’s best period in the game came in the opening ten minutes of the second half. Christine Fagan landed a free and 1-1 from Lynn Watters gave the girls in red some hope trailing 1-9 to 1-4. Kilmessan didn’t panic. Aileen Donnelly sent over another free and Katie Ni Coilean got in for a goal to put the game well beyond Trim. Kilmessan led 2-11 to 1-4 after 15 minutes. Goals from Tara Murphy and Megan Ni Coilean made it 4-12 to 1-4. Trim finished with a flourish and 1-1 from substitute Suzanne Hayes put a better complextion on the score board.
